Flore de Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe (Fiori delle serre e dei giardini d'Europa) è stata fondata da Louis van Houtte, proprietario del vivaio di maggior successo dell'epoca nel continente europeo, e curata insieme al famoso botanico Charles Lemaire .

La rivista, con più di 2000 tavole, era una vetrina per sontuose incisioni di botanici unici provenienti da tutto il mondo. Le tavole superbamente illustrate, litografie colorate a mano o finite arricchite con gomma arabica, contengono una meravigliosa selezione di piante seguendo gli interessi dei famosi contributori dell'epoca: rose, bulbose, orchidee, palme, rododendri, camelie e piante esotiche tra le 23 volumi.

Ogni singola stampa misura circa 6 1/2 pollici per 9 3/4 pollici e il doppio o folio stampa 9 1/2 pollici per 13 pollici. Sulle doppie è presente una piega centrale, come emesso e mostrato nell'immagine. La carta è un cartoncino bianco fine e spesso, con pochissimo foxing o altri difetti. La colorazione è spettacolare. Nella maggior parte dei casi, c'è una pagina di testo di accompagnamento e una copia del frontespizio.

La maggior parte delle piante raffigurate nel diario erano in vendita nel vivaio di van Houtte, quindi in un certo senso queste lastre fungevano da catalogo. È affascinante vedere le specie considerate le più ambite dei tempi, con una preponderanza di orchidee, rose, camelie, azalee e rododendri, per non parlare delle piante carnivore, tropicali e altre esotiche. È un vero piacere fare un salto indietro nel tempo per visitare questo illustre vivaio, di cui sarebbe difficile trovare oggi uno simile.

Flore de Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe (Flowers of the Greenhouses and Gardens of Europe) was founded by Louis van Houtte, owner of the most successful nursery of the time on the European continent, and edited together with the prominent botanist Charles Lemaire.

The journal, with more than 2000 plates, was a showcase for lavish engravings of unique botanicals from around the world. The superbly illustrated plates, hand colored or finished lithographs enhanced with gum Arabic, contain a wonderful selection of plants following the interests of the famous contributors of the era - roses, bulbous plants, orchids, palms, rhododendrons, camellias and exotic plants among the 23 volumes.

Each single print measures approximately 6 1/2 inches by 9 3/4 inches & the double or folio prints 9 1/2 inches by 13 inches. On the doubles, there is a central fold, as issued and shown in the image. The paper is a fine, thick white stock, with very little foxing or other defects. The coloring is spectacular. In most cases, there is an accompanying text page and a copy of the title page.
